An Analysis of Differences in Labour Productivity in Manufacturing: Spain and Germany, 1993-2007
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to conduct a comparative analysis of labour productivity in manufacturing between Spain and Germany in the period 1993-2007. The aim is to identify the determinants that hinder the continued growth of productivity in Spanish industry when compared to Germany. The motivation is to find out if differences in productivity arise mainly from distinct production structures, if they are mainly due to an intrinsic problem of the industrial productivity itself or a combination of both. Results indicate that differences in industry structure do not totally justify the gap in productivity between the two countries. We conclude that there is a problem of convergence speed of both production structures, rather than one of absence of changes.
