Contingent Work and the Productivity of service industries
Abstract
This study analyses the effect of contingent work arrangements on the productivity of service industries. To do so, we analyse data from a sample of 665 service companies located in Catalonia (Spain), by means of hierarchical multiple linear regression. The results show that the usage of non-permanent forms of work, in particular temporal employment and independent contractors, has a negative impact on the productivity of knowledge intensive services. This negative relation, instead, does not appear in the rest of service companies. The results suggest that decisions on the employment of contingent workers should take into account the type of activity that the company carries out, in terms of knowledge intensity.
